PEORIA, Ill. – A St. Louis man found guilty in February in the stabbing death of a Peoria doctor three years ago will spend nearly a century behind bars.
Robert Ely was sentenced Thursday to 99 years in prison for the January 2021 stabbing death of Doctor William Marshall.
Judge Katherine Gorman added a 15-year sentence for theft to be served at the same time.
Ely was found guilty of fatally stabbing Marshall, then stealing several paintings valued at more than 200-thousand dollars.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says one of Marshall’s sons testified at the hearing, saying the murder of his father has caused “terror, grief, and heartache.”
Prosecutors at the hearing called Ely a predator that preys on the elderly.
